Highlights for the Week

On February 17th at about 6:35 PM Ukiah Police stopped a vehicle driven by 54 year old James Gary Persky in the 400 block of East Perkins Street. Persky had been drinking, and was found to be too intoxicated to drive. Persky was also determined to be on probation and prohibited from driving after drinking, and his 14 year old child was a passenger in the vehicle. Persky was arrested for DUI, child endangerment, and violation of probation.

On February 17th at about 6:55 PM Ukiah Police responded to an apartment complex in the 300 block of Leslie Street regarding a report of juveniles drinking alcohol in the carport area. As the officer approached a group young subjects, two suddenly ran away and ignored commands to stop. After a short foot pursuit one of the subjects was captured and placed under arrest. The 15 year old male juvenile was found to have been drinking, and to be on probation and prohibited from doing so. The juvenile was booked into Juvenile Hall for resisting arrest and violation of probation.

On February 17th at about 10:10 PM Ukiah Police were driving through the parking lot at Safeway, 653 South State Street, when the officer observed 49 year old David William Newton exit the store. The officer knew Newton was not welcome at the store because of his history of constantly harassing customers, being intoxicated at the store, and stealing alcohol. The officer contacted Newton, and observed him holding his arm tightly to his side. The officer found Newton was concealing a gallon bottle of tequila, worth approximately $35.00, which Newton had just stolen from the store. The officer then observed a store employee escorting 50 year old Cruz Angelica Rea out of the store, and learned Rea was intoxicated and had been caught trying to shoplift food. The officer also learned Newton had just been refused service by the store, and asked to leave. Newton was arrested for shoplifting, and was found in possession of medication which he did not have a prescription for. Newton was booked into the County Jail for shoplifting and illegally possessing prescription medication, and Rea for public intoxication.

On February 18th at about 12:00 PM Ukiah Police stopped a vehicle being driven by 51 year old Claire Marie Long in the 700 block of South State Street. Long displayed symptoms of drug influence, and the odor of marijuana was detected from within the vehicle. Long was found in possession of less than one gram of methamphetamine, and was arrested for methamphetamine possession.

On February 18th at about 6:20 PM Ukiah Police responded to a vehicle versus pedestrian injury traffic collision in the 1200 block of South State Street. Officers located the 39 year male pedestrian still in the roadway, and noticed he had been drinking. The pedestrian was transported to the hospital for moderate injuries, and while there was found to possess a large amount of hydrocodone pills, a commonly abused prescription narcotic. Officers learned from several witnesses that the pedestrian was observed to be intoxicated just prior to the collision. According to witnesses, the pedestrian was walking along the west sidewalk when for unknown reasons, suddenly ran without looking across State Street and into oncoming traffic. The pedestrian was struck in the northbound lane by a vehicle being driven by a 67 year old female, who reportedly had no time to stop and couldn’t have avoided colliding with the pedestrian. Charges are being sought with the District Attorney’s Office against the pedestrian for possession of a narcotic.

On February 22nd at about 8:45 PM Ukiah Police responded to the vacant warehouse in the 200 block of East Gobbi Street regarding the odor of burning plastic. Officers found the structure had again been forcefully entered, and observed a small fire on the concrete floor inside the building. Officers determined two plastic shopping carts had been laid on their sides and ignited, and the burning plastic had ignited other debris. The Ukiah Fire Department was summoned, and officers located several people sleeping inside the building. Officers then observed another fire on the floor of a second story wooden platform within the building. The fire was smoldering under clothing that had just been placed over it, and was located directly overhead of two sleeping subjects. Officers located 19 year old Robert Bruce Campbell hiding nearby, and knew him to be on parole. Campbell was intoxicated and placed under arrest. Through further investigation officers determined Campbell likely set both fires, and he was charged with arson and violation of parole, and booked into the County Jail.
