Statistics

Arrests included: 6 for public intoxication, 4 for domestic violence, 3 warrant arrests, 3 for burglary, 3 for shoplifting, 2 for drug influence and/or possessing drug paraphernalia, and 1 each for; battery on a police officer, possessing marijuana, resisting arrest, possessing a loaded firearm, theft, hit and run, possessing a dangerous weapon, and threats. Probation or parole holds were placed on 2 of these arrests.

Officers investigated 1 injury traffic collision, 1 hit and run traffic collision, and 1 traffic collision. One vehicle was impounded for 30 days due to the driver being suspended or unlicensed.

Officers took reports of: 9 found property, 4 vandalisms, 3 thefts, 2 missing persons, and 1 each of: battery, domestic violence, manufacture of a controlled substance, abandoned vehicle, and animal bite.

Officers assisted the Mendocino County Sheriff’s Office with a parole search, the Mendocino County Probation Department with a probation search, and Child Protective Services with a neglect investigation.

Highlights for the Week

On March 31st at about 7:25 PM Deputy Probation Officers with the Mendocino County Probation Department requested assistance from the Ukiah Police Department with a probation search. Officers responded to a residence in the 600 block of Mendocino Avenue and learned a subject had retreated into the attic and was evading the officers. The subject was identified as 19 year old Jose Manuel Estrada Wirt, who refused initial commands to exit the attic. Wirt eventually crawled out of the attic and was greeted by Ukiah Police Officers who took a hold of Wirt to prevent him from escaping custody. Wirt was belligerent with the officers and refused to place his hands behind his back to be arrested. Wirt turned his body and thrust his elbow backwards striking an officer in the chest, and he was taken to the ground and taken into custody after a brief struggle. Wirt was booked into the County Jail for resisting arrest, battery on a police officer, and violating his probation.

On March 31st at about 10:45 AM Ukiah Police responded to Denney’s Restaurant at 105 Pomeroy Drive, regarding two subjects who’d left without paying for their meals. Officers learned restaurant employees had followed the suspects out of the restaurant but they refused to stop and return to pay for their meals. The officers were unable to locate the suspects, and broadcast a description of the suspects to other officers. At about 1:20 PM a Ukiah Police Detective observed the suspects seated on the grass, with a third subject, near Wal Mart at 1155 Airport Park Boulevard. The investigating officer arrived and detained the two suspects, who were identified as 21 year old Travis Joseph Humphrey and 23 year old Kenneth Dale Warhurst. Humphrey and Warhurst were belligerent and yelling obscenities, and were placed under citizen’s arrest by the Denney’s employees after being positively identified. Neither Humphrey nor Warhurst possessed any means to pay for their meal, and were booked into the County Jail for burglary and conspiracy. The third subject was identified as 20 year old Dustin Andrew Golyer, who was found to have a warrant for his arrest and was also booked into the County Jail. The two dogs located at the scene were transported and released to the care of Mendocino County Animal Control.

On April 1st at about 6:50 PM Ukiah Police responded to the Alex Thomas Plaza at 300 South State Street regarding the report of a subject challenging others to fight. The 15 year old male juvenile suspect was spotted on the west side of the Plaza, and he fled running across School Street and behind a building. The juvenile continued running with the officers in foot pursuit, and he was soon captured after running back into the center of the Plaza. The juvenile was found to have been drinking in violation of his probation, and was booked into Juvenile Hall for resisting arrest and violating his probation.

On April 1st at about 10:05 PM Ukiah Police responded to the 1100 block of Mulberry Street regarding a fight between females. Upon arrival witnesses identified a male and female walking away as being involved in the disturbance. The female, identified as 27 year old Krystal Lynn Mills, was found to be extremely intoxicated and was arrested for public intoxication. Officers were told Mills had been involved in a physical altercation with the male and had kicked, slapped, and struck him with her purse causing minor injury, and also to have been involved in a fight with another female and had pushed her and pulled her hair. Mills was belligerent with the arresting officers, physically refusing to enter the police vehicle and flailed and kicked her legs, striking an officer several times. Once in the vehicle Mills had to be further restrained as she struck her head against the vehicle and spit numerous times. Mills was booked into the County Jail for domestic violence, resisting arrest, battery on a police officer, and public intoxication.

On April 2nd at about 1:45 AM Ukiah Police stopped a vehicle being driven by 39 year old Christopher Aurelio Rau, in the 100 block of Clara Avenue. Rau had been drinking, and was found to be too intoxicated to drive and was arrested for DUI. Inside Rau’s vehicle a loaded handgun was found under a seat. Rau was booked into the County Jail for DUI and possessing a loaded firearm in a public place.

On April 2nd at about 10:25 PM Ukiah Police responded to the Express Mart at 998 South State Street for a report hit and run traffic accident. The victim reported having parked his vehicle in the parking lot, and was inside the store when he heard a collision, saw his vehicle had been damaged, and saw a lifted black Toyota 4X4 pick-up with a roll-bar speeding away. After obtaining witnesses statements and viewing the store’s security video footage, the suspected driver of the hit and run vehicle was identified as 22 year old Michael Christopher Holberg, of Ukiah. At about 11:45 PM Ukiah Police located Holberg in the 700 block of Apple Avenue. Holberg denied being involved in the accident, and stated he’d been at a residence all night and hadn’t left. When confronted with having been viewed at the store on video, Holberg claimed to have walked to the store and denied driving. Holberg was intoxicated and was arrested for DUI and hit and run, and booked into the County Jail. It was determined Holberg had made efforts to hide his vehicle, and Holberg’s vehicle with a plate of 3N03236 has not been located. Anybody seeing the vehicle or knowing its whereabouts is asked to call the Ukiah Police Department at 463-6262.

On April 4th at about 11:25 AM Ukiah Police responded to a residence in the 100 block of Clara Avenue at the request of Child Protective Services. CPS workers were attempting to contact 36 year old Susan Charlotte Holmes, who was refusing to cooperate with the workers. Officers spoke with Holmes who was holding her infant child, and found Holmes to be under the influence of a controlled substance. Holmes was arrested for drug influence and child endangerment, and booked into the County Jail. Holmes’ child was released to the care of Child Protective Services.

On April 6th at about 6:45 PM Ukiah Police responded to the 700 block of South State Street regarding a dog possibly being abused. Officers found 20 year old Mary Sophia Zell and another female in an argument near the Windmills Restaurant, and heard Zell threaten to stab and kill the other female. The officer saw Zell was holding a dog with one hand, and was holding knife at her side in the other. Zell discarded the knife at the officer’s command, and was placed into handcuffs for officer safety. Officers learned Zell and the other female had been arguing over ownership of the dog, when Zell pulled the knife and threatened the other party. Zell was booked into the County Jail for threats and brandishing a weapon.

On April 6th at about 7:15 PM Ukiah Police responded to Wal Mart at 1155 Airport Park Boulevard regarding a theft. Officers learned 43 year old Michael Thomas Mertle had been observed by store employees exiting the store with a shopping cart full of merchandise, without paying. Mertle was detained by store employees who contacted police. It was determined Mertle had entered the store with the intent to steal merchandise, and he was arrested for burglary. The stolen merchandise was valued at over $600.00.
