Highlights for the Week

On July 29th at about 2:15 PM Ukiah Police Officers in the 900 block of North State Street attempted to contact a 16 year old male juvenile runaway, who also had a warrant for his arrest. The juvenile refused orders to stop and ran from the officers, crossing State Street and headed towards the Fairgrounds parking lot. A female in the area saw the suspect fleeing from officers, and she grabbed onto the suspect as he ran past her in an attempt to stop him. The suspect, who was much larger than the female, twisted away from the female’s grasp causing her to fall to the ground. Pursuing officers soon caught up to the suspect and took him into custody without further incident. The female received minor scrapes during the incident, and the juvenile suspect was booked into Juvenile Hall for the warrant, and for resisting arrest.

On July 30th at about 12:55 AM Ukiah Police responded to the 700 block of South State Street regarding the report of juveniles tampering with vehicles in the area. Upon arrival officers located three male juveniles walking in the area. Two of the suspects fled from officers, one of which was soon located and detained. Officers found three vehicles in the area had been entered and rummaged through, and determined various items had been taken from the vehicles; including CD’s, a knife, and cigarettes. Some of these items were soon located on the ground in the area. The 12 and 14 year old male juveniles were identified by a witness as suspects, and both were cited and released to their guardians for prowling. The following day, after further investigation, two additional suspects were identified and later contacted. It was determined an additional 13 year old male juvenile had removed some of the items from vehicles, and was arrested for theft, prowling, and conspiracy. Another 13 year old male juvenile was arrested for conspiracy, prowling, and violation of probation. The 12 and 14 year old male juveniles originally contacted were located and charged additionally with conspiracy, and the 12 year old with violation of probation, and the 14 year old for theft. All subjects were booked into Juvenile Hall.

On July 30th at about 11:35 AM an off-duty Mendocino County Sheriff’s Deputy observed a male and female run out of the Ross Dress for Less store, at 550 East Perkins Street, carrying a large bundle of clothing still displaying price tags. The Deputy followed the suspects as they ran to a vehicle parked behind the store, identified himself and attempted to detain the suspects as they placed the clothing into their vehicle, locked the doors, then drove away. The Deputy contacted authorities and followed the suspects as they drove north on Orchard Avenue to Brush Street, west to North State Street, then fled northbound at a high rate of speed. Responding law enforcement officers located the vehicle near the Empire Drive intersection, and the vehicle continued northbound, its driver ignoring the officers’ emergency lighting. The vehicle drove onto the northbound HWY 101 on-ramp, then turned around and drove back onto State Street, proceeded south then turned onto the northbound on-ramp after striking a sign. The vehicle continued to ignore the law enforcement vehicles’ emergency lighting and drove southbound briefly on the highway before crossing into the median and continuing across northbound traffic lanes, then down an embankment and stopped. Both suspects exited the vehicle, and the female suspect, identified as 36 year old Melinda Lee Hendricks of Albion, was taken into custody almost immediately. The male suspect, later identified as 25 year old James Lee Herriot of Ukiah, fled on foot. After a lengthy foot pursuit through drainage ditches and over fences in the area, Herriot was apprehended. Hendricks was booked into the County Jail for burglary, conspiracy, and resisting arrest. Herriot was booked into the County Jail for burglary, conspiracy, resisting arrest, and violation of parole. The stolen clothing was recovered and valued at just over $200.00.

On August 1st at about 3:40 PM Ukiah Police responded to the area of the 500 block of Talmage Road regarding the discovery of an unreported stolen vehicle. Police learned an employee of a local auto repair business had observed the "shop car" parked in the area, and realized the vehicle must have been stolen, and called the police. Officers contacted residents in the area, and learned a male subject had been seen associated with the car who was currently in the back yard. The suspect fled the yard before officers could contact him, but was soon located walking nearby. The suspect, identified as 59 year old Eugene Harris Jones, initially denied trying to hide from officers or being responsible for driving the vehicle. It was later determined Jones had driven the vehicle and he was subsequently arrested and booked into the County Jail for possession of stolen property and violation of probation.
